The iBook Stare

A couple of days after upgrad­ing to a Mac­Book Pro, I’m still doing ‘the iBook stare’—that’s the five, ten or twenty second pause where your brain switches off com­pletely and waits for the com­puter to open an appli­ca­tion, or for Fire­fox to render a web page; the human equiv­a­lent of the spin­ning beach­ball of death.

It turns out that there’s really quite a big dif­fer­ence between a five-​year-​old iBook with a 700MHz Pow­erPC G3 and 640 MB of RAM and a brand new Mac­Book Pro with a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2 GB of RAM.
