Diamanda 1, Beyoncé 0

On Sunday night I saw Diamanda Galas singing selections from La Serpenta Canta, and last night I saw Beyoncé Knowles singing selections from Dangerously In Love.

I was really, truly hoping that the two gigs would match up, so that I could write something amusing (to me, at least) about the essential diva-ness of divas. I was planning to say that the mysterious combination of wondrous vocal talent, stroppiness and generally being really hot that sets a certain sort of female vocalist apart crosses all musical boundaries, so that a woman who sings operatic blues numbers about death, AIDS, Armenian genocide and more death (Galas) has much more in common with a woman who sings thumping great R & B numbers on fatuous topics (Knowles) than you might think. And I had a joke about shiny thighs too.

But Beyoncé let me down. By being totally shit.

  1. She is as you described and so are many others propped up by the ever present public relations types who revolve around every major star. In fact, though I am by no means a star, I might hire a PR person to build hype about me!
