Infrasound

I posted this to Metafilter yesterday, but since I know our regular readers don’t hang out there, I might as well whack it up here too, with added links from the comments:

Infrasound: Elephants use it to communicate, the military have sought to harness its power as a weapon (.pdf). So have The KLF. Now, a group of avant garde musicians invite you to feel the bass. If reports of the Feraliminal Lycanthropizer are to be believed, that could be one hell of a gig.

  1. the psychoactive powers of Genesis P-Orridge’s Psychic TV (circa 1992 I think) had to be experienced to be believed. Gut wrenching euphoric drug free experiences all round.

  2. The Fabulous Kakapo parrot of new zealand uses infrasound in its call. The male honks away to attract a mate using a very low frequency sound. Because of this the females cannot localize him, and so they find it a wee bit difficult to reproduce. There are only about 50 of them left

  5. Infrasound can be harmfull to humans and in extreme cases can lead to death, but these waves need to be highly directed and amplified to do so. It has been used for medical purposes too, for instance, causing vibrations in the body to treat kidney stones. Another use has been to provoke emotions. Adolf Hitler had infrasound played at speeches to excite and enrage the crowds.
