Interesting results last night: Labour losses, Lib Dem losses, SNP losses and Tory stasis put the focus on independent and small party success. I take this as a sign that people are getting more comfortable with the second vote, which gave the SSP a fantastic result - five six MSPs, all via the party list, putting them in a position to exert real influence.
My constituency, Glasgow Kelvin, reflected the trends across Scotland:
Candidate | Party | Votes | % | +/-% |
Pauline McNeill | LAB | 7880 | 35.7 | -9.1 |
Sandra White | SNP | 4591 | 20.8 | -8.5 |
Douglas Herbison | LD | 3334 | 15.1 | +2.0 |
Andy Harvey | SSP | 3159 | 14.3 | +9.5 |
Gawain Towler | CON | 1816 | 8.2 | +0.3 |
Alistair McConnachie | IND | 1300 | 5.9 | +5.9 |
The turnout was typically weak, too: 35.9% of the electorate, down 10.5% from last time.
make that 6 msp’s for the SSP!
