The first date on the Lady Sovereign micro-tour was a hoot. Despite the Police turning up to turn the music down, the best MC in the UK™ was on fine form, especially when dissing Jentina (‘You was born in a caravan, not the ghetto’ or words to that effect) and taking the mick out of herself for being tiny, cheeky and young.
My personal highlight was the Ess Oh Vee herself asking, ‘Where you getting all these fresh dubs?!’ while I was playing. And, yes, I know exactly how pathetic that makes me sound.

The stereotype offered is simply a continuation of the same assault on threatening aspects of working class culture that has been going on for centuries. The simple-minded characterisation of the hard-drinking, drug-taking, thug-like underclass just itching to destroy everything was misguided in the 19th century, and it’s misguided now.
‘Chav culture’ is not something based on a bizarre ideology of ‘anti-social behaviour just for the sake of it’. It’s a lifestyle choice that happens to draw a lot of kids who come from a background of fear, poverty, petty criminality and violence - then have that role further thrust upon them as they are shunned by morons, such as those on these boards, as ‘feral youth’ who need to be stamped out.
Musically I have little objection to her, the lyrics at least have a content which is somewhat more original than ‘Oh why the pain, life sucks so much because I can’t get a giiirlfriend’ or ‘I love you’ or ‘I’m gonna get rich and pop a cap in yo ass’, and are pretty catchy. I like the campaign to keep hoodies too, warm in the winter innit.
