The Case of the Persistent Stylesheet

Right, I’m flummoxed. Leon is suffering from some sort of bizarre system-wide stylesheet persistence problem. No matter what he does in terms of refreshing, clearing his cache and the like, both IE and Mozilla on his OS9 machine load the previous stylesheet for this site. And by previous, I mean the one that is no longer on the server, and therefore isn’t available for his browser to download. This is annoying, because I can’t see what I can do about it — it’s not a glitch with the new stylesheet that’s causing the problem, it’s the fact that the new stylesheet doesn’t exist as far as Leon’s computer is concerned.

Maybe changing from a linked stylesheet to using @import will do the trick, but that will cause different problems for other people. Hmmn.

Update: changing the name of the stylesheet to cachethisbitch.css worked a treat. Which just goes to show that swearing at computers really does work. And that the Big Issue office must be behind some cacheproxydoodah that I know nothing about. Meanwhile, another regular reader writes to say of the new look, ‘i don’t like it and it makes my eyes hurt… i wish i had leon’s computer.’ Watch this space for a new new look a bit like the old look but with new bits!

  1. Clicked link. Hit refresh. Got old style sheet. (Again.) No welcome message forthcoming.

  2. Doesn’t make no sense to me - there are no copies of that stylesheet you’re seeing anywhere on the server, so you must be seeing a cached copy of the old one…

Did any of the test pages I mailed work? And have you rebooted after clearing the cache in IE? Bit drastic just to view this site, but since I can’t do much about it at this end…

  3. sent you an email about this; should be with you soon. it gets odder and odder.

  4. I’ve observed the same problem with an even more bizarre twist - Mozilla finds the new stylesheet just fine, but IE ignores it. I had to use the rename hack. It’s now - ihateyouie.css … arrrrrgh

  5. In case you change stylesheets again, just advise IE users to press Ctrl-F5. The magic “super refresh” equivalent for Mozilla users would be shift-Reload.
