Martin Amis on War

I don’t really disagree with much that Mart, if I may be so bold as to diminutiserate the nabob Amis, has to say on the matter of the present war, the war, that is, that is presently to be waged. Nor would I — that is to say, I also would not — wish to rain scorn upon this favourite author of mine (he my author-favour has, in spade-heaps!) But, here I must add a rebuttal; must, if you like, butt-heads re: his style. It is just getting too much to take, take it too much I do, and in the taking tiresome it becomes, and I of it tire. This amaranthine alliterative abusing of anacoluthon, anadiplosis, anastrophe and anaphora annoys me most; most of all these devices are they that annoy. Me, I mean.

  9. I only got about half way through that Amis piece. Remind me never to read any of his stinking books…

  10. No! His stinking books are mostly wonderful - I bet you a tenner that if you read London Fields (my favourite of his, I think) you’ll love it.
