Wanna-be Web Browser

the wanna-be web browser is a pretty cool text-only browser for your mac, which means ludicrously fast browsing if you’re only after good hard information, as opposed to pretty pictures… you might as well download, seeing as it’s only 200k.

just to be perverse, here’s how it looks when pointed at metafilter.

on the subject of non-standard browsing action: I/O/D 4 is an interesting way to get around. again, it’s largely text-based, but this time with a rather more abstract interface (it’s art, as well as a browser) that draws maps of urls leading to and from a page, streams raw html and allows you to save .txt files of an entire site or network of sites. if nothing else, it looks pretty. read about it.

browser-gestures by mark dagget also takes the browser as a starting point, but since it’s a pc only piece, i have no idea what it actually does. and i suppose there’s no harm in linking to the idea line again, or the w3c’s usability initiative browser page, which has lots of links to odd browsers (mainly aimed at disabled people) that could be put to interesting uses. although why anyone is still using web-to-email servers is a bit of a mystery…

this has been blogged to death, but BT (the telecommunications giant, not the trance overlord who records for perfecto) is trying to patent the concept of the hyperlink. idiots. read about it (and the bloke who really invented links) here
