On a music tip

okay since we’re on a music tip today, and since i ain’t said anything in a while…

props, if i can be hip hop for a moment, to the records i have to review this week:

boards of canada’s geogaddi which is wonderful and floaty and gorgeous and all those other things that boards of canada records are. [on a semi-related note: get thee to the warp site for a cracking, ahem, ambient radio mix from mira calix]

cornelius’s point, which exists somewhere in a venn diagram involving occasionally twee japanese pop, disco, thrash metal and the inside of brian wilson’s head.

things i did actually buy this week past: person’s from person to person, [warning: that link’s all in german] on spezial material. never let it be said that i’m a shallow soul, but i was swayed by the packaging [weird cloth outer sleeve; gorgeous screen-printed inner sleeve, complete with cd-rom.] nevertheless, it rules: clicking, sputtering electronics, weird loops and squeaks, on the line between beautiful and scary, which is the best place to be. word, if you will, to Tim Hun/hexxy for bringing me a copy all the way from switzerland. slint’s spiderland which isn’t so much new as 11 years old, but i’m replacing a stolen cd. it’s still great, and still noisy, after all these years, but anyway, next!, before i start waxing lyrical in a rose-tinted stylee about all manner of early 90s american indie nonetities… the chicks on speed/kreidler sessions are pretty much what you’d expect [bored vocals, wonky beats, scrappily hand-drawn artwork], although there’s a dancehall vibe going on as well. also got a hood vs duo fourteen 10” on 555 of leeds [yeah, so it says ‘of philadelphia, usa’ on the site, but who are you gonna believe?]. dub wastelands, trumpets, john barry-esque soundtrack glitches. sounds better on 33 than the recommended 45. oh, and i got a brilliant fridge+d one sided 7” on soul static sound. fried and edgy, but oddly relaxed. bargain price of one english pound. result.

art for the masses…been researching the interweb in the course of reviewing a bridget riley show…here’s a review of another show from new york.

music/weirdness interface, part the first: bob mould, ex husker du and sugar mainman, is now writing scripts for the wwf. make of that what you will.

music/weirdness interface, part the second: the morrisey predicted the death of princess di theory. [stolen, shamelessly, brazenly, from memepool.] some people have too much time on their hands.

oh, and finally, a warning: don’t spend the best part of 30 minutes writing a blog entry and then press ‘escape’ by accident. because you’ll lose the whole fucking lot.
