Clare Short Refuses to Rule Out Resignation
This could be quite a blow to Mr. Blair — a few PPSs jumping ship won’t be causing the PM to lose much sleep, but a member of the cabinet is a different matter. In a Radio 4 interview [partial transcript, audio] Short had this to say:
If there is not UN authority for military action or if there is not UN authority for the reconstruction of the country, I will not uphold a breach of international law or this undermining of the UN, and I will resign from the government.
Whether or not she resigns, it has been made ‘crystal clear’ that this principled stand will cost Short her career.
