Scottish Socialists Make Six Pledges
BBC News reports on the Scottish Socialist Party’s six pledges for the elections in May.
They are:
- Abolish council tax in favour of Scottish Service Tax based on income
- Free school meals for every state school pupil
- A minimum wage of ã7.32 for all public sector workers
- A 35-hour maximum working week across the public sector
- End PFI and clear private finance from Scotland’s public services
- Oppose and obstruct any war for oil
I have a feeling that last one will be a vote-winner, and attract Labour voters who might otherwise balk at voting Socialist. As The Scotsman reports, Tommy Sheridan is going so far as to brand the SSP as the ‘peace party.’ The first won’t exactly put people off either.
At the moment, I’m not sure if the Party’s claim to be on course to return ‘as many as eight MSPs’ is wildly optimistic, spot on or even an underestimate
For more from The Scottish Socialist’s, they have a weblog. Is it usual for political parties to have a weblog?
For a deeply funny exposé of the left’s tendency to split, call everyone else a splitter, then split from itself over the question of who should be called a splitter: Sectarian Worker
As far as I am aware the SSP is the only party in Britain to run a weblog or to pay attention to accessibility or web standards. Greenpeace do run one, as does as least one Norwegian party I am aware of.
Nice weblog by the way.
