Hammertown
Fruitmarket, the Edinburgh gallery, has a great show on until late November. Hammertown is a showcase for West Coast-based Canadian artists, all of whom share, to varying degrees, a fascination for media (as in mass) and dig, like, fucking around with cultural constructs.
My favourite piece in the show is ‘Beer Cooler’ by Brian Jungen - a bog standard icebox full of beer engraved with biker gang tattoos and white trash iconography. It’s like an artifact made by some future forger to confuse an anthropologist of our present.
Also, while looking at this show it was hard to repress the urge to shout ‘Stop! Hammertown!’ and do a little MC Hammer dance.
