Spain: Quite Good Really
spain is responsible for many great and wonderful things like tortilla sandwiches and ridiculously gilded cathedrals paid for with real bones and blood of believer types and cats that live in rocks, and an amazing white wine called albarino which is a kind of hybrid viognier / light riesling
oh and the sonar festival and an exciting exhibition of sonic art - sonic process - that’s on in barcelona just now.
then there’s mister miguel de cervantes, whose big famous tome was recently voted the best novel ever written (??). the voters were all Very Important Luminaries in the literary world, so I’m sure they worked out how you can decide on that one before hand.
But but but the best thing about spain is the huge amount of goya all over the place and everywhere, from the very famous but chilling and wonderful and Important guernica at the reina sofia in madrid to his dimming years’ black paintings, at the prado.
And then, because bull fighting season is upon us, there’s an exhibition of his tauromaquina sketches at the prado also and a room dedicated to his caprichos and desastres de la guerra in zaragoza, too.
All of which brings me to the chapman brothers and a five year old (almost) sensation piece, where they took goya and made him new.
